Creating NZ Certificates — CoC, ESC, RoI & CoV

A step-by-step walk-through of the WireWrite certificate wizard

Before you start

Make sure your profile is complete in Settings — full name, EWRB licence, and a digital signature with PIN. You can't issue a certificate without these. See EWRB Licence Verification and Profile and signature for setup.

Choosing a certificate type

Click Create on your Dashboard to open the certificate wizard. The first step asks you to select a certificate type.

  • Certificate of Compliance (CoC) & Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC)

    The standard combined certificate for prescribed electrical work. 7 steps covering work details, compliance, supply, safety, and testing. Most common choice. See EWRB CoC explained for what each section needs to contain per regulation 73.

  • ESC only (stand-alone)

    Dedicated 3-step ESC wizard when no CoC is required — e.g. connection to the mains where the work was certified separately.

  • Record of Inspection (RoI)

    For high-risk prescribed electrical work requiring independent inspection. Issued by a licensed Electrical Inspector (EI prefix).

  • Certificate of Verification (CoV)

    For verifying existing installations, disconnected supplies, or connection to the network. Verification or Connection sub-types.

Tip: Not sure which type? The selection screen shows a short description of each one. You can also cancel and start again — drafts are auto-saved so nothing is lost.

Using the wizard

The wizard walks you through each section step by step. You can move forward, back, or jump to any step using the stepper at the top, or on a mobile device by swiping left or right.

Auto-save

Your work is automatically saved as a draft whenever you move between steps — forward, back, or jumping with the stepper. You can close the browser and come back later; your draft will be waiting on the Dashboard.

Navigating steps

  • Desktop: use the Previous and Next buttons at the bottom, or click any step number at the top.
  • Mobile: swipe left for next, swipe right for previous. You can also tap the stepper.

Tap-to-Speak

On Work Description fields, tap the microphone icon to use voice input — useful on mobile when you're on site. Your browser will ask for microphone permission the first time; allow it and you're set.

Certificate numbering

Certificate numbers are generated automatically when you issue the certificate — format YYMMDD-TYPE-00001. You don't need to enter one manually. Company employees share sequential numbering per company per day per type.

Additional circuits on a CoC

A CoC records one set of test results for the installation as a whole. When a job has separate parts that each need their own test sheet — an inverter, a battery, an EV charger, a sub-board — add them as Additional circuits on step 6 (Testing). The section is optional: leave it empty and your certificate is unchanged.

Adding a circuit

Scroll to Additional circuits (optional), pick a type, and click Add circuit. Each circuit opens as its own panel you can collapse once it's filled in. You can add up to 6 — past that, issue a second certificate.

Solar PV (inverter)

The AC results plus a DC array record laid out as an AS/NZS 5033:2021 Appendix E commissioning sheet: module make and model, modules in series, strings in parallel, PV array maximum voltage and maximum string current, insulation test voltage, array +ve and −ve to earth, frame earth continuity, irradiance, and array operating voltage and current. Then Voc, Isc, insulation resistance and polarity for each String / MPPT — add a row per string.

AC circuit

A circuit you name yourself — EV charger, battery storage, sub-board, or anything else you want recorded separately.

What every circuit records

Polarity, insulation resistance, earth continuity, Zs (earth fault loop impedance), PFC (prospective fault current), RCD results, and free-text remarks — whatever the circuit type.

RCD results

RCD fields sit on the main test card as well as on each circuit, so a single-circuit CoC records them too. Choose the RCD type (including Type A + 6 mA RDC-DD and Type B for EV charging), the rated residual current, trip times at IΔn and 5×IΔn, and the test button result. If there's no RCD, say so — "No RCD fitted" is recorded as a statement rather than left blank.

Pass and fail hints

Trip times are checked against 300 ms at IΔn and 40 ms at 5×IΔn for a 30 mA device (AS/NZS 3000:2018 Section 8), and DC insulation readings against AS/NZS 5033:2021 Table 4.7, which sets a 0.5 MΩ minimum below 120 V rather than the 1 MΩ used on the AC side. These are advisory only — a reading you know is right is always recordable, and a hint never stops you issuing.

On the PDF: circuits print as Annex A on their own page, with a one-line pointer under the test results on page 1. Page 1 stays the standard single-page Form 1 — no circuits means no annex and no extra page.

Copying a certificate

If you install the same thing several times a day for different customers, you don't need to re-enter the work details each time. Find a previous certificate on your Dashboard and click the Copy certificate icon. A new draft opens with the reusable parts already filled in.

What gets carried over

  • Work type and description, risk category, installation scope
  • Supply type and earthing system
  • Compliance parts, additional standards, and the documentation you relied on
  • Work and connection dates, set to today

What you still enter yourself

  • Customer and site address — a copy is for a different job, so these start blank.
  • All test results, including additional circuits and RCD readings.

Test results are never copied. They're measurements of one specific installation — carrying them across would let an untested install be certified as tested. Enter the testing you actually carried out on this job, and check the compliance declarations still apply before you sign.

The new draft opens with an amber "Copied from …" banner naming the certificate it came from and listing what's still to fill in. It clears as soon as the draft is first auto-saved — that happens when you move to the next step.

Issuing & signing

On the final Review & Sign step, you'll see a summary of all the details you've entered. Check everything carefully — once issued, certificates are locked.

    Preview the PDF

    Click Preview to see exactly how the certificate will look when issued.

    Sign with your PIN

    Click Sign Certificate (PIN Required). Enter your 4-digit signature PIN and your saved signature will be applied.

    Issue the certificate

    Click Issue Certificate. The wizard validates all required fields — if anything is missing, you'll see a list of issues grouped by step so you can fix them quickly.

Excluding the ESC section: On the Review & Sign step you can tick "Exclude Electrical Safety Certificate (ESC) section" to leave the ESC certifier details blank on the PDF — useful when the ESC is being signed by someone else.

PDF download

Once a certificate is issued, you can download it as a PDF at any time:

  • From the Dashboard, click the view icon on any issued certificate
  • On the view page, click Download PDF
  • PDFs are generated server-side for the sharpest print quality (vector graphics, not raster screenshots)

Emailing to clients

WireWrite can email certificates directly to your clients with the PDF attached.

Sending by email

  • On your Dashboard, click the email icon next to any issued certificate.
  • The client's email (if saved) is pre-filled. You can add or remove recipients.
  • Click Send — the client receives the email with the PDF attached and a secure download link.

Share links

Emails include a secure share link that lets clients download the certificate from any device. Share links expire after 7 days but can be opened as many times as needed during that window.

Editing drafts and deleting

  • Drafts appear on your Dashboard with a yellow "Draft" badge.
  • Click the edit icon to resume where you left off.
  • Click the trash icon to delete a draft you no longer need — a confirmation dialog will appear.
  • Issued certificates cannot be deleted or edited — this protects the audit trail. Certificates are retained for the 7-year period required by regulation 73.
